A pressure washer that’s starting to struggle doesn’t always give you much warning. Sometimes it’s a drop in pressure mid-job. Sometimes it’s a new noise, or a leak that appears out of nowhere. And sometimes it keeps running just well enough that you put off dealing with it, right up until it stops completely at the worst possible moment.
Knowing the signs early makes a real difference. A small issue caught in time usually means a straightforward repair. Left too long, it can mean a much bigger bill or a machine that’s beyond saving.

Signs Your Pressure Washer Needs Repairing
Pressure that drops or won’t hold
Low output pressure is the most common complaint, and on a commercial or industrial machine it usually points to one of a few things:
- Unloader valve wear – the unloader regulates pressure and takes a lot of wear on machines running long daily cycles
- Worn pump pistons or seals – these degrade over time and reduce the pump’s ability to maintain consistent output
- Inlet filter blockage – worth ruling out first, but if the filter’s clean and pressure is still low, the pump needs a proper look
Pulsating or surging pressure is a related but separate problem. If output cycles up and down throughout a job rather than holding steady, that often indicates air in the system or a damaged pump valve. It also puts unnecessary stress on other components while it’s happening.
Leaks (visible and otherwise)
Water leaking from fittings and connections is easy to spot. Pump seal leaks are less obvious. You might notice a small puddle under the machine after a job, or a slow drop in output over weeks as the seals wear through.
Oil in the water outlet is more serious. If there’s an oily residue in the water stream, pump seals have likely failed, and crankcase oil is mixing with the flow. Running the machine in that state causes further internal damage; get it off the job and booked in.
Milky or cloudy oil in the pump’s sight glass tells the same story from the other direction: water has got into the crankcase, which means seal failure and the clock is ticking on the pump’s internals.
Sounds that don’t seem right
Grinding or knocking from the pump usually means worn bearings or internal damage. A hollow, chattering noise (cavitation) typically means the pump isn’t getting enough water supply and is running partially dry, which accelerates wear across the whole pump head.
Either way, if the machine is making a noise it wasn’t making last month, stop running it and get it checked before continuing.
Engine and Motor Problems
Petrol engines
Difficulty starting, rough running, or an engine that cuts out mid-job are all worth acting on early. Fuel system issues and carburettor wear are common culprits, and both are straightforward fixes when caught in time. Left to run rough, they turn into bigger problems.
Electric motors
A motor that trips a circuit breaker, runs hot, or hesitates at startup usually points to a winding issue or a capacitor on the way out. Continuing to run an electric motor when it’s under stress is one of the faster ways to turn a repair into a full replacement.
When the same problem keeps coming back
If you’ve replaced a fitting, cleaned a filter, adjusted a valve, and the fault is back within a week, something upstream hasn’t been identified. Recurring faults are the clearest signal that a professional inspection is needed rather than another round of the same fix.
It’s also worth paying attention if you’re burning through parts and accessories faster than normal. Excessive wear on nozzles, hoses, or seals can be a symptom of a pressure or flow issue that’s quietly stressing the whole machine.
